ASUU and Federal Government – The Story So far

Culled from YNAIJA

The Federal Government has began fresh talks with ASUU to find solution to the on-going strike action in the universities. The Minister of Labour and productivity; Chief Emeka Wogu disclosed that his ministry has began talks with ASUU through a negotiation team.

The negotiation team which includes members of National Assembly is headed by the Secretary to the Federal Government, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim. The Minister while addressing the Bamanga Tukur led leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee (NWC) on the activities of his ministry spoke for the government and how it is not satisfied with the original agreement which he described as complex.

He stated that “We have made offer to ASUU. It is as complex as presented. Negotiation is on going, we believe they will soon call off the strike, I’ll personally and passionately appeal to them to call off the strike” he explains further that if they call off the strike, it will not affect the negotiation process but that it is “better to be inside than outside”

Some of the demands of ASUU includes amendment of retirement age of academics on professorial cadre from 65 to 70, Funding requirements for revitalisation of Nigerian universities and federal government assistance to State Universities, payment of earned allowances, reinstatement of prematurely dissolved governing councils, transfer of Federal Governing landed properties to Universities among others.
We sure do hope the issues are resolved soon, so we can go back.
