32,552 persons live with HIV/AIDS in Niger –Agency

Niger State Agency for Control of AIDS (NISACA) Director- General, Mr. Adams Baba Umar, has said that the state has no fewer than 32, 552 persons living with HIV/AIDS virus.
Umar said in Minna that of the figure, 20, 598 were placed on care and support treatment and 17, 944 on antiretroviral treatment.
He said the prevalent rate of the disease stood at 6.2 per cent in 2007, but reduced to four per cent now due to concerted effort by the state government.
Umar said in 2007, 58 people accepted to test their HIV/AIDS status of which 13 tested positive.
The director-general, however, said the state has 25 health facilities that administer comprehensive treatment to people living with HIV/AIDS as well as 128 Primary Healthcare Facilities that give Prevention of Mother to Child Treatment (PMTCT) across the state.
