JK Rowling; Author of Happy Potter writes a new novel for Adults

J K Rowling's first novel for adults, which goes on sale at 8am this morning, is already breaking records.

Pre-sales of The Casual Vacancy are the highest of any book this year, but little is known about the its content, which has been shrouded in secrecy.

Reviewers have been given strict embargoes to sign, although a few early reviews have appeared and the response is mixed, with one saying Rowling has retained her magic and another that the novel is "dull".

The novel is believed to be about a "snobby middle class" community riven by provincial politics and the fallout when a parish councillor dies in a West Country village.

It has been reported that the village she describes is based on Tutshill where Rowling was brought up as a child.

However, residents told Sky News they are not particularly happy about the description and it is not their experience of the area. Carla Newton said people are keen to find out more.

"I'll definitely be reading it in case I can recognise someone. I'm a little bit cross about it, I can't see it (the description) myself, but wherever you live there are certain people who come across like that," Ms Newton said.

The landlord of the local pub Live And Let Live, Chris Luxton, said the publicity has been good for business but he did not recognise "a snobby middle class" community.

"It's certainly not like that at the moment. She's portraying it as it was in her teenage years, that may well have been the case then but not anymore."

Rowling has revealed her next book is very likely to be a children's book.
