Cult war: Group crushes graduate’s head with stone

Tragedy struck at the University town of Nsukka, Enugu State, last weekend as rival cult groups clashed, leaving one of them dead while a middle -aged man allegedly hung self.

Saturday Vanguard learnt that the rival cult groups engaged one another in sporadic gun shooting at a drinking spot popularly called “Ugba Joint” and killed one Anene Eze, a graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. Eye witness account disclosed that trouble started when one of the cult groups started breaking bottles and shooting indiscriminately in the air.

The deceased reportedly inquired why they were shooting and they pounced on him, seizing his mobile phone. They later descended on him and ended up empting a good number of bullets into his body.



The deceased, Anene, while running, was chased to a pure water factory, close to the drinking joint where he was finally stoned to death as all gun shots aimed at him were unable to enter his body.

Investigations showed that the killing of Anene Eze was an alleged reprisals attack by the two rival cult groups in which one of the members was beheaded sometime ago, adding that the groups numbering over 30, were armed to the teeth for the attack.

Reports further revealed that on noticing that bullets would not enter his body, he was held down, facing up and a heavy stone was used to crush his head while his brain and blood littered the entire place. According to eye witness account, the deceased group was not expecting any trouble of any kind that faithful Sunday night at Ugba Joint while the other cult groups were for a long time prepared for the reprisal attack.

In another development, a middle aged man whose identity was not known was discovered hanging behind Baptist church near Nitel Terminal in Nsukka.

The immediate cause of the suicide could not be ascertained as at press time as residents within the area said they woke up and saw the man hanging there.. They were afraid and could not get close to know who he was.

His corpse had decomposed and stank which chased away residents of the area. The Nsukka Local Government buried him there immediately.

Contacted for comment, the divisional crime officer (DCO) Nsukka police division Supol Abraham Moses confirmed the two tragic incidents, adding that police are carrying out investigations into the killing of Anene Eze while no arrest has been made as at the time of filling this report.
