11 killed, 17 injured, 6 vehicles damaged in Ibadan auto crashes

 At least 11 people including two school children were yesterday confirmed dead in a multiple road accidents in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, while 16 others sustained injuries. The first accident which occurred on the Ibadan–Ife expressway at about 2.47 p.m involved a Toyota Hiace which was said to be heading for Abuja. Seven people out of the 18 passengers on board were said to have died on the spot after the vehicle abandoned its lane and crossed to the other side to hit a stationary truck at the Ile-Ife end of the expressway.

Daily Sun gathered that the driver of the Toyota Hiace with registration number QX 362 LSR (Lagos) which was heading for Abuja was said to be drunk at the time of the accident and was driving reckless before he finally ran into the vehicle parked by the road side.


In the early hours of yesterday, precisely 7.30am, two petrol tankers and a Volkswagen commercial vehicle with registration number XA 760 BLR (Gombe) and XU 440 SAK and UZ 758 KJA (Lagos) were said to have killed two school children on their way to school.

The two trucks, according to eyewitnesses, were trying to over-run each other when suddenly they swerved to different directions, leading to the death of the school children who were walking by the road side.
 A woman was also said to have been hit by the trailer before it rammed into a mechanic village where about six vehicles were also damaged. Three people who sustained injuries were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The Head of Operations of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Egbeda Unit Command, Assistant Corps Commander Dennis Ioryina who confirmed the crashes said the truck with registration number XT 134JJJ coming from Ife had broken down along the road, but while the driver was trying to fix the tyre, the Toyota Hiace ran into it, killing seven people and injuring others.
The driver of the vehicle were said to have sustained serious injury and was later rushed to hospital.
Ioryina said the driver of the Toyota Hiace bus had left his lane while trying to avoid an armed robbery attack, adding that the accident would have been averted if he had kept to his route.

The FRSC boss added that all the injured victims were taken to Axion Hospital and University College Hospitals (UCH) while their corpses were deposited at a Catholic Hospital, Ikire, Osun State.
