China has agreed to give Nigeria a $1.1bn (£700m) low-interest loan to build much-needed infrastructure. The deal was struck during Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan's meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Wednesday. The money would help build roads, airport terminals in four cities, and a light-rail line for Nigeria's capital.

“I'm from Delta State. I was born into a Christian family of five girls and a boy. I lost my brother in 1991 to asthma. I lived with my parents until I came to Lagos after my secondary school. My family name was changed from Ojukwu to Damasus during the Nigeria/Biafra civil war because we were being mistaken to be related to a warlord. I was told that my family name used to be Ojukwu but during the civil war there was confusion because a lot of my family members were mistaken to be related to one war lord. They were burning a lot of houses in my village so my father and his brother decided to adopt my grandfather's first name. It was a Greek name which was Damasus, my grandfather's name was Damasus Ojukwu. So I was born into Damasus not Ojukwu and the only thing I know about the civil war are the stories my parents told me.”

Showing contempt for the state of emergency in effect in Yobe State, suspected Boko Haram militants today stormed a boarding school and killed 30 students.
A credible military source in Nigeria who confirmed the attack to to SaharaReporters said the incident occurred at the Government Secondary School in the town of Mamudo at about 2am. The militants seem to have regrouped in a commando style to carry out the butchery, some of the victims reportedly burned alive despite soldiers all over the place enforcing the military emergency.
In addition to the dead, many others incurred serious injuries and were rushed to hospitals in Damaturu, the state capital.
One teacher, our source said, is among those killed. Troops have now been deployed to the area, but the incident calls to question the strategy being employed by the military in their implementation of the state of emergency, and how much success they have actually achieved so far.
