Enugu Timber Market has been burnt, destroying more than 100 shops and properties worth over N300m.
Amongst items destroyed includes wood working machines, generators, doors, timbers and more.
Witnesses praised the speedy interventions of the Enugu State Fire Service which prevented the blaze from destroying the entire market.

Man sentenced to death over 1992 ritual murder

KANO – A Kano High Court, Tuesday, sentenced one Miko Umaru to death by hanging for allegedly beheading one Hauwa Alasan in 1992 for ritual purposes.
Presiding judge, Justice Nuradden Umar, in his verdict, held that the court was satisfied with the evidence brought against the accused person.
Umar ruled: “I have no discretion based on Section 221 of the Penal Code to commute the death sentence.
Boko Haram convict, Sentenced to three years jail term
An Abuja magistrate court has sentenced to three-year jail term an ex-spokesperson of the Nigeria's extremist Boko Haram sect blamed for scores of attacks, including the August suicide bombing of UN headquarters here, killing 23 people and injuring more than 80 others. Chief Magistrate Oyebola Oyewumi had convicted Ali Konduga for felony on November 22 after he pleaded guilty to the one-count charge against him and asked for leniency.
Robbery scare in Ife as banks close shop
OSOGBO—Residents of Ile-Ife in Osun State were yesterday gripped with fear over rumour of an impending attack on banks and other commercial institutions in the town by armed robbers.
Some commercial banks which had earlier opened for operations hurriedly shut down activities after the rumour filtered to them.
Many customers who had earlier arrived the banks for business transactions were disappointed when it became obvious that the banks were not prepared for business.
Fire razes 10 houses in A/Ibom
UYO – No fewer than 10 houses were on Monday night razed at Iwuokpon, a coastal settlement near Qua Iboe River in Ibeno, Akwa Ibom.
The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that many people were rendered homeless, while property, including, 15 outboard engines, fishing gear, cash and other valuables were burnt beyond recognition.
NAN learnt that the fire lasted several hours before it was prevented from spreading to other houses in the fishing settlement, near Mobil Producing Terminal.

12 pupils escape death as school building collapses

BADAGRY— No fewer than 12 pupils narrowly escaped death, yesterday, at Igborosun, near Badagry, Lagos, when a portion of a building in a government-owned school collapsed on them.
Vanguard gathered that the portion of the building on the premises of Saint Paul’s Anglican Primary School, Igborosun, collapsed at 10 a.m during class work.
An eye-witness said the victims were later rushed to Badagry General Hospital, where they are being hospitalised for medical treatment.

ASUU vows not to go back to classes until demands are met
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday vowed not to go back to classes until its demands were met fully by the Federal Government. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports from Lagos that ASUU began a nationwide indefinite strike midnight on Sunday. 6 killed as Boko Haram attacks banks, Police hqtrs in Bauchi
Bauchi — Six persons were killed, yesterday, while five others were injured when gunmen attacked Police Area Command headquarters and two new generation banks at Azare Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
The Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Mr Ikechukwu Aduba, who confirmed this to newsmen at the police headquarters in Bauchi said the gunmen, whose numbers were yet to be ascertained, launched a ferocious attack at about 1 a.m. at the police facilities at Azare with 20 rocket launchers and locally made bombs, which completely devastated the entire Area Command’s Headquarters.
According to the Commissioner of Police, “the attack was launched simultaneously at six facilities including the mobile base, the area commander’s police station, two new generation banks and one Ali Kwara’s residence.
Ojukwu to be buried February 2, 2012 – S-East govs
ENUGU- THE remains of former Biafran leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu who passed on November 26, would be laid to rest on February 2, next year, the South- East Governors’ Forum announced on Sunday.
Chairman of the forum, Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State, who briefed newsmen after their meeting in Enugu, said all the funeral ceremonies of the late Igbo leader would commence in Enugu on February 2, after which his remains would be taken to his country home, Nnewi, for interment.
Obi said a committee would soon be set up to discuss further on the burial arrangements of the late statesman.
3 killed as gunmen bomb police station, 2 banks
Three people have been confirmed killed when gunmen yesterday bombed the Divisional Police Station and two commercial banks in Azare, Bauchi State.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikechukwu Aduba, confirmed to newsmen in his office yesterday that one policeman, a soldier and a civilian were killed during the attack.
Aduba said, “Over 20 rocket propelled bombs were launched from outside the Area Command’s headquarters building and it completely devastated the building.” The police commissioner said that about 30 policemen on duty at the Area Commanders office responded and repelled the attackers. There was heavy exchange of fire between the police and the gunmen that lasted over four hours, the CP said.

World’s first sex school opens in Vienna

Vienna, Austria is the new home to the World’s first international applied sex school, which claims to teach its students how to become better lovers.
The “hands on” syllabus will cost students a cool £1,400 per term and will see students living in mixed sex dormitories, where, they are expected to practice their homework. Hmmm, I wonder what type of applied sexuality homework that is!
