Presidency probes EFCC over arrest of ex govs

The personality clash between the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Bello Adoke and the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mrs. Farida Waziri is heading for the worse as both play their respective roles in the prosecution of the government’s anti corruption campaign.

While the AGF believes in the rule of law in the prosecution of an offender, EFCC allegedly pushes for the aggressive hunt and mob trial approach which was the hallmark of the Nuhu Ribadu years. And that is why the Presidency is studying the processes that led to the arrest of four former governors last week while some other former chief executives of some states were left as untouchables.

Cop kills two brothers over bribery

Akure TWO brothers were reportedly shot dead by a policeman in Okitipupa area of Ondo state over N20 bribe (Egunje) at check point.

Three other persons are critically injured and are on admission at an undisclosed hospital in the town Saturday Vanguard gathered that the deceased brothers are motorcycle riders in the ancient town.

It was gathered that the ugly incident occurred at Kajola street junction along Broad Street at about 9.15pm on Thursday.When one of the deceased was flagged down by the policeman who was on a foot patrol demanded for a twenty naira bribe from him, the okada rider popularly known as Osare according to an eye witness told the police man that he was off duty that day and would be unable to pay the bribe.This according to an eyewitness account provoked the policemand he immediately shot him at a close range and hit him on the chest.Saturday

Rick Ross Suffers Seizure On Plane, Falls Unconscious

 

According to TMZ, US rapper Rick Ross has been reported unconscious and is receiving CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) from paramedics who are trying to resuscitate him.

The 35-year-old rapper was flying from Fort Lauderdale, Miami to Memphis, Tennessee when he fell unconscious. The plane was forced to make an emergency landing.

However, DJ Sam Sneaker, a reported member of the Rick Ross crew has confirmed via Twitter that the rapper is ‘good’. ‘I’m wit @rickyrozay now he good…’ @DJSamSneaker tweeted. It is believed that Ross has regained consciousness.

Fake EFCC official arrested in Aba

A 31-year-old man, who has been presented himself as an official of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and duping petroleum product dealers in Aba, Abia State has been arrested by the police.
The man, who hails from Okada Local Government Area of Edo, was arrested yesterday with the assistance of members of the Independent Marketers Association of Nigeria (IMPAN), Aba chapter. But for the timely intervention of the police and IMPAN officials, the suspect would have been lynched by a mob at Osisioma, in Aba for allegedly duping a petroleum dealer of N60,000. On interrogation by the Aba Area Police Commander, Mr Rabiu Dayi, the suspect allegedly confessed that he impersonated as an EFCC official.
He, however, said he only went to the filling station to harass the dealer for selling adulterated fuel to him in February, saying he did not collect any money from him.

Kidnapped Imo commissioner regains freedom

OWERRI – Imo State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Lady Chioma Ogoke, who was kidnapped nearly one week ago in Owerri, has been released by her captors.

Confirming the news in a telephone interview, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Dr. Obinna Duruji, said his colleague was released in the early hours of yesterday.

He said: ”The Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Lady Chioma Ogoke, has been released by her captors. She was released today (yesterday).”

When asked whether any ransom was paid, the Commissioner declined comment, especially as security agencies are said to be still probing the incident.

Bomb scare at Information Ministry in Abuja

  ABUJA—There was pandemonium at the Federal Ministry of Information, Abuja, Thursday as staff and visitors as well as passersby ran in different directions over rumours of bomb explosion.

The 9-floors building also houses the headquarters of Federal Radio Cooperation of Nigeria, FRCN, Voice of Nigeria and the Ministry of Information.The situation, however, was brought under control, even while the Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, was at Presidential Retreat currently going on in the city.According to one of the staff in the building, there was a letter warning staff of the ministry of a possibility of bombing the building.

US to award $3m scholarships to Nigerian students

  ABUJA—United States Government has offered $3 million scholarship grants to Nigerian students for the 2011 and 2012 academic year, the US Embassy disclosed yesterday.

The scholarship scheme, under the Educational Advisory Centre, according to the Deputy Chief of Mission in the Embassy, James McAnulty, will afford Nigerian students the opportunity of studying in the United States.

Speaking during 2011 Annual College and career Fair in Abuja, McAnulty said: “During the 2011 to 2012 academic year, we anticipate that Nigerian students participating in our Educational Advisory Centre will receive nearly three million dollars in financial aid and scholarships.

Strike: Delta govt sacks 15 doctors

 For daring the Delta State government and persisting in the strike embarked upon by doctors in the state over a month ago, 15 of the doctors have been shown the exit door by the government, the state Commissioner of Health, Dr. Joseph Otumara has revealed.

The doctors under the aegis of Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners went on strike over tax-related issues and the demand to redeploy the Permanent Secretary of the state Health Management Board, Mrs. Caroline Ajuya over alleged high handedness.

Dr. Otumara had warned them to call-off the strike and resume at their duty posts or risk being sacked. He described the strike by the workers as an abuse of industrial process, saying the issues had earlier been resolved.

BlackBerry Service ‘Fully Restored’ says RIM

Research in Motion co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie held a phone-in press conference, today, to announce that BlackBerry services have been “fully restored” around the world, according to a Time magazine Technology report.

“On Monday we had a hardware failure,” began Lazaridis, who went on to explain that one of the company’s data switches failed in Europe, at which point “the backup switch didn’t function as intended, Lazaridis was quoted to have said.

BlackBerry services have been fully restored as of “early this morning,” according to Lazaridis, who continued on to say that they’re now “flushing through the queue” of backlogged messages. Any delays right now are purely the backlog of messages that have built up.

Blackburn Rovers’ striker, Yakubu Aiyegbeni has passed a damning verdict saying that Nigeria head coach, Samson Siasia should leave his post.

Pirates kill 2 in Calabar, injure others

Calabar – No fewer than two persons were feared dead in a fight between pirates and staff of an oil company on the Calabar, Cross River and Oron, Akwa Ibom states’ waterways.

The incident happened the same day the Cross River State Government pleaded with the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ola Ibrahim to intervene in the incessant attacks of pirates, militants and other criminal elements at the waterways in Bakassi Local Government Area of the state.

The two oil workers, who were reportedly on routine duty to lift oil from offshore, met their untimely death on the high sea, as they were attacked by pirates in a speed boat heading towards the oil installa-tions with empty jerry cans to scoop crude oil.

Rooney banned for three Euro 2012 matches

NYON(AFP) – England striker Wayne Rooney was on Thursday banned for three matches by UEFA for his red card against Montenegro, a decision which will rule him out of the group stages of Euro 2012.

Manchester United star Rooney was punished for his 74th-minute sending off in the 2-2 draw in Podgorica last Friday in England’s final qualifier.

“The UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body has today handed down a three-match suspension to England forward Wayne Rooney following his dismissal during the UEFA Euro 2012 qualifier in Montenegro last Friday,” said a UEFA statement.

Man, 70 arrested for defiling girl, 8

 A 70-year-old man, simply identified as Baba Sunday has been arrested by the police for allegedly defiling an eight-year-old girl in Lagos. The old man, who is currently facing interrogation at the Ilaje Police Station, was said to have taken the girl to a popular hotel (name withheld) in Bariga where he defiled the girl.
The suspect was said to have booked the hotel room for N10,000 before luring the girl to the place.

The hotel managers did not suspect foul play when they initially saw the little girl going inside the room with the man, who is old enough to be her great grand parent. The receptionist in the hotel was said to have become worried when she checked the time and later discovered that the time was far spent and there was no mature girl that came with the man.
