A Federal High Court sitting at Ikeja, this morning sentenced the General Overseer of Christ Redemption Apostolic Church, Pastor Eunice Owoyele to 14 years imprisonment for child trafficking.
Her church is situated at 15, Olaoye Ogunyemi Street, Off Powerline, Ikorodu, Lagos, southwest Nigeria.
Also sentenced along with Pastor Eunice Owoyele, 40, is one of her accomplices, Mariam Mohammed, a.k.a. Mama Blessing, 50. Mariam will also stay behind bars for 14 years.
They were jailed for luring an 18-year old girl from Nigeria to Libya for prostitution.
The offence was committed in August 2010 in Lagos.
The two convicts were arraigned before the court on 4 February this year on a three count criminal charge of organising foreign travels for young girls for prostitution abroad especially in Libya, procurement for prostitution and deceitful inducement to go from place to place contrary to section 15a, 16 and 19 b of NAPTIP Act.
In the case, the prosecuting lawyer, Mr. Kehinde Falade called four witnesses while the convicts who testified for themselves were led in evidence by their lawyer, Mr. R.O. Akande.
The mother of the victim reported to NAPTIP when her daughter and her friend who were sent to Libya discovered that they were lured there for prostitution. The girl called her mother on phone to complain about her situation.
Consequently, NAPTIP contacted the Nigerian Embassy in Libya to repatriate the girl.
However, the whereabouts of the other victims have remained unknown.
The lawyer to the convicts, Mr. Akande pleaded for leniency as he urged the court to temper justice with mercy by giving his clients an option of fine.
But the presiding judge, Justice Stephen Jonah-Adah said the act under which the accused persons were convicted did not make any provision for fine.
Consequently, the convicts were sentenced to 14 years imprisonment each.

Omowunmi Akinnifesi Writes From Experience: The blessing & the curse of "The Beauty Queen"
2005 Most Beautiful Girl In Nigeria, Omowunmi Akinnifesi has got something to say about her personal experience as a Beauty Queen in her 'diva diaries' blog. Being a Beauty Queen is glamorous, fabulous and exciting. Chaperons go everywhere with you. You travel and represent your country in different parts of the World. You meet people and lets just say you are practically living the fairytale life in reality. Errrrrr, yeah! Just until the responsibilities and pressures of being a Queen kick in. When you have to look a certain way, dress a certain way and even talk a certain way. You practically become a robot while
that crown is on your head. But of course when the crown finally comes off, it's like lifting a stone from your head. You feel lighter and even more spontaneous.
It hurts when I hear people talk about Beauty Queens, saying, "She disappeared", where is she now? What is she doing? Now let me ask you these
questions; do you disappear? Where are you now? And what are you doing? Yeah! Didn't think you'll be able to answer that easy. People forget that these girls are actually normal human beings. Most girls
win the crown in their extremely young years (Say age 18), and by the next year decide to move on to new and better things. Some go ahead to finish school, some leave the country for better education, some get married and some just decide to be on the low. Being a Beauty Queen is not a career. It is a one-
year opportunity to live a dream and whatever you decide to do after that is your choice.
The first encounter you go through as a Queen is that "she slept with the organisers of the Pageant. Hearing this breaks my heart. A girl has finally
achieved her life long fairy tale dream and all people say is that she slept with the organisers. That's pitiful. I can officially and humbly say that participants of "The Most Beautiful Girl In Nigeria Pageant"(Sorry but this is the only Pageant I can vouch for) do not even meet the organisers throughout the event. I am a perfect example.
I went into the pageant for fun, without thinking I would win. My University at that time was on strike and this was an opportunity to have fun. I did not know a single soul. A very dear friend of mine forced me to escort her to the auditions. The dance Choreographer for the Pageant at the time, asked what Agency I was from and I said "from home". You
should have seen his face "he almost bust into laughter because most girls in the Pageant where from top Modelling Agencies, they had been on popular Bill Boards, Calendar adverts etc. And all I had done was "come from home". Yet I won. I must tell you that I never thought I would win. I wasn't the most beautiful girl there yet my light shone on that
day and I was picked.
I hereby urge any young girl that wants to go into the pageantry World to go in confidently. Trust me it's a fair shot. I am a living example (I'll tell the journey to the crown story another time).
Winning the crown is one thing the aftermath is another. From the day you win, even if you become President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria people will still address you as "Omowunmi Akinnifesi, ex Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria" or "Agbani Darego, one time Miss World" winner. Hahahahaha, that always gets me laughing. It has its pros n cons but it is strange that your past follows you like a shadow.
Another annoying issue is the stereotype that Beauty Queens sleep around. That just gets under my skin. Why must this be so? Why? As for my case, I have
maintained a scandal free aftermath and I humbly thank God for saving me from the hands of the devours. From a man called Dele Fasan: The Red Carpet Fraudster who walked up to me at an event asking to take a photograph and proceeded to granting an interview with journalists that we were dating for years. Or the Naeto C issue where it was said that we were an item and I even met his Mum (Hardly even knew him then), or "Omowunmi and her Escorts"- Anyone that knows me well would laugh at this blatant lie. As if that wasn't ludicrous enough they come with a blockbuster "She dates married men" (this one got me laughing hard). All these false fabrications just to sell papers and also to get hits on Internet Blogs is highly disheartening. Some of these people are better off picking a career as movie scriptwriters. We all wake up to condemn society and indeed the Government for our woes and travails when indeed we the people, contribute a great quota of unimaginable ills to society. Oh well, it comes with the territory we tell ourselves. The bitter price of fame. People forget that Queens are Human. I am not saying all Queens are clean (I mind my own business). But it just damages the entire platform.
The worst part is that after everything. After all the travelling, exposure and meeting people from different parts of the World, it is said, "Beauty Queens have no brains". No brains? Are you kidding me? Seriously? Do you know what it takes for a young girl to walk a World wide stage? Or to answer a
question in front of billions of people? Maybe you should give it a try, see how it goes. Lol. I guess as in the case of any woman, people will rather stare at you than care if you have anything upstairs your soft fluffy cotton wool brain. Is it not the same brain we all have? Why must a Woman's brain be different? In our society, a man can date five women at the same time and he's a "G", but when a woman is seen "talking" to one man (might be about business, work, possible sponsorships on projects, or just being polite), she is definitely sleeping with him. Come on people, stop being hypocrites. The amazing thing is that it is the women who run themselves down. They can't just keep their mouths shut. I tell you for free that if a Woman wants to run for President today, the first people to attack her will be Women. Why? Because of envy and jealousy.

Policeman, robbers die in bank raid
branch of First Bank Plc in Owo, Ondo State, carting away
millions of naira from its vault and killing a policeman in the process.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state police
command, Mr. Aremu Adeniran, confirmed the development in a telephone interview
with our correspondent.
He, however, said the police killed three of the robbers
and arrested four of them alive after they had robbed the bank.
He said the gang arrived at the bank around 11am and shot
into the air to scare customers and staff of the bank.
Aremu added that the gang killed one mobile policeman and
injured another one at Ipele Junction near Owo in their bid to escape to Edo
State.
He said the police recovered one of the vehicles, a
Toyota bus, used for the operation at Ifon while they chased the fleeing
robbers to Sabongida Ora, where three of them were killed.
Adeniran also said an undisclosed amount of money stolen
from the bank was recovered from the robbers.
An eyewitness said, “The robbers announced their arrival
at the bank with sporadic gun shots to scare away the customers and security
men at the bank.”
The witness added that the robbers held both the bank
officials and their customers hostage before they gained entry to the bank
fault.
Apart from that, they were said to have seized some money
from customers and the tellers.
A source said, “During the operation, the robbers shot
one policeman at the scene.”
Other banks in Akure, the state capital hurriedly closed
their doors. Many customers were unable to transact business due to the
development.
Adediran said, “Our men are up to the task. We will not
allow criminals to hold our people to ransom or scare investors from this
state. Investigation into the incident continues. “The policemen recovered one
of the buses used by the robbers and recovered the money they stole.
“The policemen gave the robbers a hot chase from Owo town
through Ifon where one of them was killed at Ipele junction.” He also said the
policemen caught up with all of them at Sabongida-Ora in Edo State where they
killed two and arrested four others. Adeniran said the suspects would soon be
paraded by the state police command.

10 die, 4 injured in auto crash

DUTSE – Ten persons died yesterday on the spot while four others sustained various degrees of injuries at Kazaure in Jigawa State when a mentally retarded man caused an auto crash involving a bus and a truck along Dambatta- Kazaure Road.
The drivers of the vehicles were among those who died in the accident which happened at about 9.45 am, just as those injured were receiving treatment in hospital.
Eyewitnesses told Vanguard that the drivers of the two vehicles were trying to avoid the madman who was sluggishly crossing the busy highway and collided in the process. The victims were said to have died before medical personal got to the scene.
The chief medical officer in charge of Kazaure General Hospital, Dr. Yusuf Makam who confirmed the story told Vanguard that eight out of the 10 dead bodies had been claimed by their families after they were identified, while two bodies are yet to be claimed.

Sunny Neji - Why I shot my new video in India

Lovey Dovey, featuring emerging vocalist, Jodie, is one of the heartfelt songs on Neji’s latest album, Timeless, which harps on the effect of cyber communication on practical love. The choice of India as the location for the video, Neji says, is that India fascinates him because of its rich cinematic culture and expertise. “More so, I didn’t want to do a run-of-the-mill video that would just make up the numbers. I wanted something that would be the benchmark for musical videos in Nigeria and Africa. I wanted that cinematic expertise that India symbolises because the motion picture industry there is well known for its development in cinema and I think I have it already with Lovey Dovey,” Neji says.

(Touching Story) Man cuts off infant brother’s arm
When Etimbuk John was born two weeks ago, the expectation
of his parents was that people around him would show him love and affection.
The expectation of Etimbuk’s parents must have been
hinged on the presumption that a child is innocent and is not likely to be
begrudged by anybody. But just two weeks after the baby was born a cruel fate
befell him.
His mother, Mrs. Enobong John, narrated how her son, who
was born with two arms, lost his right arm due to the cruelty of his
27-year-old half-brother, Nathaniel John.
Enobong told PUNCH METRO that after bathing Etimbuk in
the morning of Tuesday, September 27, she breast-fed him and made him to sleep.
She said after Etimbuk slept, she left him in the room
and went to the kitchen to do some chores. But less than three minutes after
she went into the kitchen, Enobong said she heard her baby crying.
Thinking that Etimbuk’s cry was the normal childish prank
meant to draw the attention of his mother, Enobong said she continued with her
chores.
But Etimbuk’s elder brother, Israel, went into the room
and saw his brother in blood and writhing in excruciating pain. Israel ran out
and raised the alarm, which attracted his mother.
Enobong said she dashed into the room, saw blood all over
the bed and her two-week-old son’s right arm had been chopped off, adding that
she saw Nathaniel come out of the room.
She said, “He (Nathaniel) never stayed in Udung Otong,
our village in Oruk Anam Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. He lived in
Calabar but any time he came to the village, he behaved like a deranged person.
“We never quarreled. But he was in the habit of scaring
away little children playing around, making a noise, and often times would want
to hurt them.”
Enobong said since the day Nathaniel allegedly committed
the crime, he had not been seen.
“I have not seen him since he cut off my son’s right arm.
I learnt he had been apprehended by the young men of the village and had been
killed. This happened on Tuesday, September 27,” she explained.
Enobong said she did not know how she would be able to
pay the hospital bills, adding that as a firewood seller, she hardly had enough
to feed her family.
She said that the doctors told her that the wound would
take some time to heal and needed some money to get it cleaned regularly.
She said her husband, Sunday, had not worked since he
retired many years ago, adding that he is old and too ill to come to the
hospital from Oruk Anam.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Akwa Ibom State
Command, Mr. Onyeka Orji, described the act as a serious criminal offence. He
stated that the police were investigating the matter, adding that the result of
the investigation would prove whether Nathaniel was actually deranged or not.
He said, “It is a serious criminal offence. We are
investigating the matter. The investigation will prove whether the man is a mad
man or the act was a malicious one.
“That is a pointer to members of the public that they
should not be too trusting. We should mind the kind of people we leave our
children and wards with. People should properly screen such people.”
Concerning the allegation that Nathaniel had been killed,
Orji said he was unaware of the development, insisting that the matter was
still being investigated.
The Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, Dr. Emem
Bassey, said he was being careful with the matter since a government official
had asked him to be careful in commenting on the issue.
The Executive Director of UyaiIba Akwa Ibom (a ministry
dedicated to the helping of children), Mrs. Favour Onobo, said if not for her
timely intervention, the baby would have died.
Onobo said Sunday had been out of employment for a very
long time because of old age and is even bedridden.
She said the cost of getting the mother and the children
to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital was borne by the organisation.
Onobo urged Nigerians to come to the aid of Enobong so
that she could save her child’s life.

"Legalize Prostitution In Nigeria" - Deputy Senate President
Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu yesterday asked the Senate to consider the possibility of legalising prostitution in the country.
Speaking during debate on a motion on the scourge of human trafficking in the country, Ekweremadu said since it has become impossible to stop prostitution in the land, the Senate should consider regulating the act in the country.
According to him “we need to regulate prostitution in this country so that if anyone wants to indulge in prostitution, the person should be registered and issued with a license. If we say we want to stop it, it would be difficult. It is done in other countries; let us regulate it by issuing license.”
Also speaking on the matter, Senate PresidentDavid Mark said it is difficult to stop the act of prostitution saying “the FCT administration has been trying to stop but they are facing stiff resistance because the prostitutes have their association and even their own legal adviser. It is a reasonably organised bad profession.”
While debating on the motion that centred on human trafficking, several senators advocated for amendment to the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) Act to provide for capital punishment for those involved in human trafficking.
The position followed a motion on the scourge of human trafficking in the country moved by Senator Dahiru Awaisu Kuta (PDP, Niger East) and 33 other senators.
In his motion, Kuta said though NAPTIP is struggling to tackle the menace of human trafficking in the country, “the situation has been on the increase and has been identified as the world’s fastest growing criminal industry, second only to drug trafficking and fraud.
In his contribution, Senator Uche Chukwumerije (PDP, Abia) said “we should upgrade the punishment for human trafficking to capital punishment. Equally to be joined are all the security personnel that are along the route where it take place. I don’t believe that it is happening without the knowledge of the security agencies along the entry and exit points.”
Also commenting, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume (PDP, Borno South) said there is need for more punitive measures to end the menace saying “human trafficking is not only in terms of export. We have house boys and girls in the country that don’t have any future. Most of them are not even up to the age specified by law. They work for so many years and all they get is commendation without any form of future.”
On his part, Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed (CPC, Kaduna North) expressed worry on the ugly dimension of human ritual to the crime of trafficking in persons. He revealed several instances of victims kidnapped and used for ‘devil worship’.
After the debate, Senate directed its committee on judiciary, human rights and legal matters to carry out further legislative action on the matter and report back to the whole Senate.

Super Eagles fine Mikel $5,000
Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi will be fined 5,000 dollars for missing the Tuesday deadline to report to the Super Eagles' camp in Abuja.
Team Media Officer, Mr Colin Udoh, said on Tuesday in Abuja that Eagles officials were unimpressed with the player and had handed down the fine to the player.
The Eagles are preparing for their Final Round Group B match in the 2012 African Nations Cup qualifying competition. The team on Tuesday morning had its first training session after it opened camp on Monday in Abuja, with only 12 players available for a warm-up.
The number of players in camp, however, swelled to 21 for the afternoon training session, with Obi the only player absent out of the 22 players invited to camp.
``All players were expected to show up by lunch-time on Tuesday, but Obi called to inform officials that he would only come in on Wednesday as he needed time to attend to family matters.''

Man, 25, Arrested for Raping 80-Yr-Old Woman
Katsina — A 25 year-old man, Mannir Goma has been arrested by the police in Katsina State for allegedly raping an 80 year-old woman in Matazu Local Government Area of the state. Parading the suspect on Monday, the state's Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Ibrahim Mohammed said Goma was arrested in Yelwa village shortly after he committed the crime. Mohammed said the victim sustained severe injuries on her private part, and that she is now receiving treatment at the Matazu health centre. He further said that 15 other criminals, including armed robbery suspects were arrested by the police in the state last month. The commissioner added that nine out of the 15 were arrested in Kankara, Batagarawa, Katsina, Musawa and Malumfashi Local Government Areas of the state. He said police recovered N490,000, an AK 47 gun, Dane guns, five locally made pistols, rounds of ammunitions, a broken safe, army uniforms and charms from the suspects. Mohammed said four others were arrested in Daura for allegedly breaking into shops and carting away four bags of cement, a bundle of roofing sheets and electronics. The commissioner said among those in their custody, is a woman, who was arrested in Runka village in Safana Local Government area in connection with the murder of a police constable. He said the suspects would be charged to court as soon as police conclude investigation.
EFCC Arrests Former Governors, Gbenga Daniel, Akala And Doma
he Economic And Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested former governors of Ogun, Oyo and Nasarawa states Gbenga Daniel, Adebayo Alao-Akala and Akwe Doma. the governors were picked up their respective homes in Lagos, Ibadan and Lafia, Thursday morning. Femi Babafemi ,EFCC spokes person said this morning that the former Governors are presently being interrogated on corruption allegations in Abuja FCT.
EFCC is said to be aiming at investigating about nine corrupt ex- Governors said to have embezzled billions of Naira withing their respective states.

FG, Japan to train 70,000 Nigerian teachers in Maths, science

ABUJA—The Federal Government has partnered its Japanese counterpart to train 70,000 primary school teachers in mathematics and science subjects in not less than 25 states of the federation.
Minister of State for Education, Mr Nyesom Wike, who received a delegation of Japan International Corporation Agency, JICA, said the partnership between the two countries would have 70,000 teachers trained in mathematics and science subjects through Strengthening Mathematics & Science Education, SMASE, programme.
Wike said the government intended to impact the right method of teaching on the teachers in order to enable pupils understand the subjects without difficulty by engendering pupils’ friendly method of teaching from the basics.
The programme, according to him, is designed to ignite pupils’ interest and curiosity in mathematics and science subjects.
“I want to thank the Japanese government for what they have been doing to support the country in various levels of education, particularly the basic and secondary education,” the minister said.
He disclosed that the federal government, through the Ministry of Education, wished that more states would get involved in the Japanese collaboration by increasing the partnership from the present 17 to 25 states.
He said: “I am aware that 17 states have join the program but 17 states are not enough. That is not even half of the 36 states.
“The ministry will put in more efforts to increase the number of states to at least 25; that will go a long way to impart on the system.”
Speaking earlier, the Japanese delegation, led by Mr Sumi Yoshitaka, said JICA commenced the programme in August last year, adding that it would appreciate a better implementation of the project in the country.

Thunder kills 2, injures 2 in Abeokuta
It was a tragic end for a bricklayer and the son of a m obile policeman in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital as they were struck dead by thunder last Saturday during downpour.
Two others, a 16-year-old boy and the mobile policeman were seriously injured and are currently receiving both treatment.
The deceased bricklayer, Azeez Salami was engaged in bricklaying works at Surulere Oke-Odo while the son of the policeman, whose identity was not immediately known, was asleep when thunder struck him. Those injured included the policeman who owns the two bed-room flat and a younger brother of the deceased bricklayer, identified as Ahmed. The deceased and the injured were said to be inside the building when the incident happened. Narrating what he described as a sad experience, an eyewitness, Mr. Adeyanju Mufutau said the unfortunate incident occurred within just a minute “and the once lively Azeez and the policeman’s son became lifeless.”
His words: “Unless it happens in your presence, you may not believe the story, but it is real. It happened in my presence and it was like a drama that I use to watch on television. It occurred within just a twinkle of an eye and the two laid dead on the floor.”
According to him, the deceased bricklayer accompanied by his younger brother whose age was put at 9 were working in one of the rooms while the landlord and his son (who was sleeping) were in another room when the thunder struck.
“It was raining and suddenly the building in which they were working went up in flames after a deafening thunderstorm hit the building. The thunder storm hit the entire area, but we were surprised that MOPOL’s building which was still under construction went up in flame.” Chairman of the area, (Surulere Oke-Odo) Landlords Association, Mr. Monsuru Adeleye who corroborated Mufutau’s narration said: “We were ignorant of the spiritual implication of the death of members of our community until we were told by elders that the fire was not ordinary.”
“According to elders, nobody, no matter his or her religion can bury the bricklayer and the landlord’s son except traditional worshippers, particularly the Sango devotees carry out sacrifice. We were later directed to some traditional worshippers at Fagbenro village, who ironically gave us a list of materials worth about N200,000.00 to procure before our dear ones could be buried.”
“Since we had no option, we rallied round to get some money and the traditional worshippers began the funeral rites of the bricklayer and the landlord’s son. I have been hearing about this unfortunate incident, but I have never witnessed it until this one in our area. It was a terrible experience and I pray that it does not happen again here.”
Although the matter had been reported at the Lafenwa Police Divisional Headquarters, the authorities there said the matter was beyond them. A police officer who spoke with Daily Sun on condition of anonymity yesterday confirmed the incident, but was quick to add: ‘’We sympathise with the families of the deceased, but we are less concerned about the tragic event, because there is nothing criminal about it.”

Robbers storm Kalu’s house, kill one, cart away N2m
LAGOS—Dare-devil robbers yesterday stormed the Lagos residence of Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, former governor of Abia State in Victoria Island and shot dead one of his workers, Michael Ogbonna. The robbers numbering two also carted away N2 million.
The incident happened at about 4 pm. The robbers were said to have trailed the deceased and two others, who had gone to the Adeola Odeku branch of Diamond Bank, to withdraw some money. An eye witness, Emenike said the three of them went to the bank at about 3.30 pm to withdraw some money and came back to meet strange faces at the premises.
“After collecting the money, we came back to the house, only to find two men standing near the compound. “As we alighted from the vehicle, one of them came from behind and we suspected them and inquired about his identity and mission to the area,” Emenike said. He explained that as the conversation was still going on, they discovered that the men were armed. “As we discovered that they were armed, two us quickly ran upstairs to lock up the security door, leaving Mike behind. We were still there when we heard a gunshot. As we came back, we saw Mike in the pool of his own blood,” he said.
The victim was quickly rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead by the doctors, as he was said to have been shot at close range.
As at the time of filing this report, the incident was still being reported at the Bar Beach police station, Victoria Island.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Samuel Jinadu denied any knowledge of robbery attack in the area, adding that he had not been briefed by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO)in-charge of the area.
When informed that the people affected went to report the matter at Bar Beach bus stop and were still there, Jinadu promised to contact the DPO) and get back to the reporter but he never did.
An eyewitness who spoke about the incident, said he was surprised at the absence of policemen in the area, as according to him, about five policemen were usually seen guarding Kalu’s compound. He wondered why none of them was on duty at the time of the robbery.

Apple's subsequent 1996 buyout of NeXT brought Jobs back to the company he co-founded, and he served as its CEO from 1997 until 2011. In 1986, he acquired the computer graphics division of Lucasfilm Ltd which was spun off as Pixar Animation Studios. He remained CEO and majority shareholder at 50.1% until its acquisition by The Walt Disney company in 2006. Consequently Jobs became Disney's largest individual shareholder at 7% and a member of Disney's Board of Directors.

Adenuga donates N150m to UNN for infrastructure devt
The Chairman of the Mike Adenuga Group, Dr. Mike Adenuga Jnr. has presented a cheque of N150 million to the University of Nigeria Nsukka for the infrastructural development of the institution.
At a special ceremony held in Nsukka on Tuesday, Dr. Adenuga said the donation was a gesture of goodwill to “this great citadel of learning that has produced leaders in the public and private sectors, chief executives and managers of multinational corporations, successful entrepreneurs and worthy ambassadors of this great country and beyond.”
Dr. Adenuga said that the MA Group made the donation in order to boost the capacity of the university to develop graduates that can compete favourably with their peers anywhere in the world, thereby securing the competitiveness, growth and prosperity of the nation.
“As an indigenous group of companies with global footprints, we believe that institutions of higher learning should be strengthened with adequate funding by both the government and the private sector to improve academic standard, research and development in line with international best practice”, he said.
Mr Felix Akintola who led the delegation that presented the cheque to the university authorities, informed the Vice Chancellor about the completion of Globacom’s model outlet, the Gloworld, the Conoil Mega Petrol Station and the ETB branch in the university community for prompt telecommunication, banking and transportation solutions, ease of transactions and improved quality of life.
He stressed the importance of the Institution and the university community to the operations of the Mike Adenuga Group comprising Globacom Limited, Conoil Producing, Conoil Plc and other companies in real estate, banking, and commended the university authorities for the laudable programmes they initiated in the institution for sustainable development and academic excellence.
In his response, the elated Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Bartho .N. Okolo who raised the cheque sky high with his two hands, said the entire university community “is excited and grateful to Globacom for this incredible gift.”
The Vice Chancellor said “this is the role we expect multinationals like Globacom to play in the development of the Nigerian academic system. I am committed to strengthening Nigeria’s Institutions, says Jonathan
Abuja - President Goodluck Jonathan has restated his commitment to building virile institutions in the country to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and make the country a better place for all.
Jonathan was speaking with the new Belgian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Dirk Verheyen, after he presented letters accrediting him to Nigeria.
He said, “you need strong institutions for a country to successfully practice federalism, and I am committed to building them in Nigeria. ”
The President commended the warm relationship between Nigeria and Belgium, reminding the new Ambassador of several outstanding bilateral issues.
Also receiving the new German Ambassador to Nigeria, Mrs Dorothee Jaretzke-Wenzel, at a separate audience, Jonathan said Nigeria had power supply challenges, and was already negotiating with Germany toward attracting investors into the power sector.
He stated that current efforts at increasing power supply would be fruitful.
The President also received letters of credence from the new Rwandan Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Joseph Habineza.
The new Ambassador thanked Jonathan for receiving him, pledging to work hard to strengthen the warm relations between his country and Nigeria. (NAN)

Confusion in Enugu over suspension of strike
There was confusion in Enugu yesterday morning over the position of the strike, which was reportedly suspended last weekend following the intervention of the Anglican and Catholic bishops of Enugu Dioceses alongside traditional leaders in the state.
Most workers actually did not go to work following a statement issued by the workers forum that workers should neglect the bishops and NLC directive to resume work, stating that workers would be addressed on Tuesday afternoon on the true position of things.
It took the intervention of the national leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress, which sent a representative to urge workers to respect the decision to suspend the strike after Bishop Emmanuel Chukwuma of the Enugu Anglican Church was booed by the workers at the NLC office near New Market Enugu where the workers gathered.
National Vice President of the NLC, Mr Emmanuel Ajoku, who said he was sent by the national president, recalled that strike became an option after negotiation with government failed.
Said he: “The NLC president, Abdulwaheed Omar asked me to come and tell you that the NLC can never abandon Enugu workers, that you should always believe and trust and that we shall be victorious at the end.
“The strike action has been suspended for three weeks. The court refused to grant injunction to government but gave 28 days for both parties to return to the negotiating table, the court also said there should be no victimization.
“We want to warn that any form of victimization against any worker in Enugu State in the next three weeks and after shall be resisted; we are battle ready. We singled out Enugu and that is the only state in the South-east we are handling now.
“We advice that you give us your cooperation; the strike would have been suspended a long time now but for the issue of victimization. If any worker is suspended in Enugu, the whole NLC in Nigeria will go on strike.”
Mr Ajoku, who said Enugu airport would have been shut down in continuation of the strike but for the court ruling, said the orgnized labour would not accept any awarded minimum wage from Enugu State, “what we want is a negotiated wage agreed and signed by both parties.”
He assured the workers that the national leadershiop of the NLC will return to the state in the next 20 days to see the level of discussion, insisting that if nothing was agreed by then the strike would resume.

This Hausa man has lived in Onitsha for 81 years (Read Interview)
For Alhaji Baba Mallam, an Hausa man from Kano State, who has lived in Onitsha, Anambra State for 81 years, his people enjoyed the commercial city in the past than they do presently. Alhaji Mallam who says he has full Igbo identity, having spent 81 years of his 86-year sojourn on earth in Onitsha and speaks Igbo fluently, said in the past, the Hausas in Onitsha had attended the Ofalla festival with the natives and had formed bulk of the people, who attended the annual festival.
As a little child, Mallam who was coming with his parents to transact business in Onitsha and later travelled back to Kano had after six years of the journey settled down in Onitsha and had since continued to live in the town.
Alhaji Mallam whose wife hails from Ojoja in the old Eastern Region got 12 children from the marriage. Two of the children died and he is left with 10, who are now all married with their own children. Today he has about 46 grand children.
Even after most of his business partners have crossed over to the other side of the Niger and settled in Asaba, Delta State due to a problem they encountered some years back which resulted in loss of lives, he has refused to leave, but has continued with his onions and beans business at the Bridge Head Market, Onitsha.
His conviction is that Nigeria is one and belongs to all irrespective of tribe or religion and that any Nigerian could settle and carry out his business anywhere he or she wants.
Mallam who spoke with Daily Sun in an interview also looked at the Boko Haram menace. Excerpt:
Where exactly is your state of origin?
I come from Kano State in the former Northern Nigeria.
How long have you lived in Onitsha?
I came into Onitsha for the first time when I was six years. I came with my parents who were coming here on business trip from the North.
We were coming here to sell things and six years after that, I settled down in Onitsha and grew up here. At that time Onitsha was not developed at all.
What was Onitsha like when you came into the town?
Not many Igbos were living in Onitsha then. People were coming from the hinterland to buy things. Hausas and Nupes occupied all these areas where we are now.
Onitsha Main Market area was occupied by Hausas and there were just a few people in the town. We Hausas formed the bulk of those who used to attend the Ofalla Festival of Obi of Onitsha whenever there was one. We joined the indigenes to celebrate the festival. There was mutual love and understanding better than today.
What made you to live here in the past 80 years?
Igbos are hospitable people. Before the civil war, there was no problem and it did not matter where anybody came from. It was not until the war broke out that many Hausas deserted Onitsha.
I did not go because nobody knew where I come from. I was still moving around in Onitsha and when anybody confronted me, I told them I come from Benin. That was how I survived in Onitsha until I joined others to move right into Biafra city where I stayed until the war ended.
What would you say about Nigerian politics?
Most politicians now seek for their individual pockets. When M.I. Okpara was the Premier of Eastern Nigeria and some other politicians of that time were in leadership, things were much better. They cared for the people and had better policies and programmes than our present crop of politicians. We did not hear about the kind of money that our present politicians often cart away now. There seems to be too much greed now, too much rancour and too much hatred in the land and in each election, we hear about massive rigging and violence. They are not good for our polity.
Politicians should endeavor to use the nation’s enormous resources to provide good welfare for Nigerians because the nation has more than enough to cater for everybody, but our wealth is in the hands of a few. This is why a lot of people go into politics, not because they have any interest for anybody, but they see it as an avenue to amass wealth.
There may not be meaningful development until our politicians, our leaders begin to demonstrate genuine desire to work for the masses whose interests they are made to serve.
Are you disturbed about the killings in the country?
All well meaning Nigerians should be concerned about what is happening, about mass killings and destruction of property. There is no justification for all the lives that are being lost almost on daily basis.
Those who are involved in the killings should have a rethink and government must be serious at tackling the problem frontally.
As a Muslim, is Boko Haram a recognized Muslim sect?
There is only one Islam, but you know that these days, people sometimes breakout and form diverse groups which propagate diverse beliefs. It is in Islam and it is in Christianity. The fact remains that Islam does not preach taking of human lives.
What would you suggest as your solution to solving Boko Haram problem?
My suggestion is that government should be stern in dealing with them. I do not believe that those members of Boko Haram are Nigerians otherwise they could not have been doing what they were doing. They should, therefore, be made to leave Nigeria if they are not comfortable with us, so that peace loving Nigerians should stay in peace. They should be given a chase. Government must do everything possible to find out who their sponsors are and deal with them. When their sponsors are identified and dealt with, they should run away and leave the country for genuine Nigerians. It is a wrong notion for anybody to think that they have the blessing of the Muslims or the North. They are simply enemies of the nation.
Anambra State Government wanted to drive you people away from this your business area, what is the position now?
Everything has been quiet in the last two years. Nobody is disturbing us for now. The fact is that this place (Onitsha side of the Niger Bridge Head) was given to us by the Federal Government and we have been paying rent on it. We now also pay to the state government which, of course, amounts to double taxation, but we do not mind. Our major problem is that a lot of us who were doing business here before have relocated to Asaba, thereby shifting the business to Asaba and for that reason, we are virtually doing nothing here. You can see that business is not moving. If it were before this place would have been very busy, but it is no longer so.
What would you expect the Federal Government to do, especially on our roads in the South- East?
Let me seize this opportunity to appeal to the Federal Government and the state government to attend to the roads in the South-east which are now in deplorable condition. It is pathetic that travelling from Onitsha to Enugu is now made so difficult because of the bad road.
A journey of about an hour now takes about three hours because of bad nature of the road. We have the resources to put our roads in order.

America wonders!!! - Okada rider changes into brand new motorbike
Something strange happened at Adeka in Gboko local government area of Benue State, weekend, when a commercial motorcycle operator, (names withheld), in a mysterious circumstance, turned into a brand new motorcycle.Crime Alert gathered from an eyewitness that the Okada rider had picked a female passenger from the Yandev area of the town en-route Adeka. On getting to her destination, the female passenger dropped from the motorbike and after paying for the ride, the ‘Okada’ rider called her attention to a sum of money he claimed dropped from the hand bag of the passenger.Our source stated that the female passenger maintained that she did not have such a huge sum in her possession hence the money couldn’t have dropped from her bag. According the source, the commercial motorcycle operator insisted that the said money dropped from the woman’s and insisted that the she picked up the money.
He said: “At this point a mild drama ensued between the two of them as the Okada rider insisted that the woman picked up the money but the woman refused vehemently. The Okada rider was almost forcing the woman to pick the money when the woman cried out for help from bystanders who intervened in the matter.”

Young Nigerians clamouring to be the next Nigerian Idol finally have the chance to be a part of the popular show. With the auditions kicking off for Season II, aspiring music stars now have the opportunity to get their voices heard by millions of viewers who love the show.
There is a new judge on the show this season as Charles [Charly Boy] Oputa joins Yinka Davies and Jeffrey Daniel for Season II. According to Season 1 Judge and Chocolate City CEO, Audu Maikori, “Nigerian Idol is an exciting brand to work with and I enjoyed myself immensely. I am sure all the judges will have blast in Season II.” Popular female musician Tiwa Savage and Veejay Ill Rhymz also join the show as hosts. The winner’s package this year, including management fee, record label contracts and the prize money has been increased to the value of $100, 000. Each of the runners-up and top ten finalists also get mouth watering consolation prizes.
The popular show starts with auditions in four cities across the country; Abuja, Lagos, Port- Harcourt and Enugu. The show begins airing 4th December, until the winner is announced at a grand gala on April 1st 2012.

It might interest you to know that the most expensive hotel in Abuja is owned by 25 years old Suleiman Idris, Son of Ibrahim Idris, The Governor of Kogi State.
Suleiman has no previous employment record and yet own's Summer Set Continental Hotels located at the highbrow area of Maitama opposite the Transcorp Hilton; The property is valued at about N5 Billion Naira in the minimum.
I think Nigeria should be proud of such diligent young men, that can amaze wealth of up to N5bn at the age of 25; certainly deserves more recognition.
