The corpse of the former governor of Ondo State, Agagu has been transferred to another plane of onward journey to Akure, the Ondo State capital after the casket was recovered from the crashed plane, even as the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) blamed Thursday morning’s incident on engine failure.
However, fresh information reaching Daily Times indicates that Dr. Olusegun Agagu’s wife, Funke was not on board the ill-fated aircraft but is in Akure awaiting the arrival of her husband’s corpse, while his son, Feyi, who was on board the plane survived.
The chartered Associated Airlines plane was heading to the Ondo State capital for the funeral of the late Governor when the plane crashed during take off at the domestic wing of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.
Speaking on the incident, FAAN Spokesman, Yakubu Datti, said the crashed plane was carrying 20 passengers and seven crew members and was en-route Lagos to Akure about 225km away.
He said engine failure caused the accident. "The engine failed," he said.
According to Datti: "It was a propeller aircraft operated by Associated Airline. There are five survivors."
He also confirmed that the survivors have been rushed to a nearby hospital.
Datti added: "The black box of the aircraft have been recovered and investigation will commence immediately."
He spoke from the crash site.
Earlier, the General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Femi Oke-Osayintolu, had told the News Agency of Nigeria that 11 passengers died while four others have been hospitalised.
Agagu died on September 13, 2013 after a brief illness in his Ibadan residence. He was aged 65.
The aviation industry has been relatively devoid of air mishaps since a Dana Air plane from Abuja to Lagos crashed into some houses at Iju-Ishaga on the outskirts of Lagos, killing 153 people.
